Making a fridge with a series of rubber bands

Further to the work done by heating a rubber band as shown on Sixty Symbols (a great series of videos) I thought I would suggest the following experiement.

Take a wide rubber band and with both hands extend it as far as you can without breaking it.
With it extended (it would have heated up due to the work done), waggle it about to get it to ambient again
Now, suddenly let it go and feel the middle. It will be significantly cooler

So, in theory, a fridge can be made by getting a series of these rubber bands, being extended cooled and suddenly released. No nasty chemicals, and very green.
